Second Generation Establishment
The Mahle House is a second generation establishment which has become a favorite for locals and tourists alike.
It was established in 1983 by Chef Maureen Loucks and Delbert Horrocks (Tara’s mother and uncle respectively).
Located in the farming community of Cedar, ten minutes south of Nanaimo, The Mahle House is situated in a restored 1904 Heritage home on a one-acre property featuring an English-style ornamental garden.
Family-owned and operated,
our philosophy is simple...to serve flavourful, unique food in a welcoming environment with relaxed, professional service.
Our staff is comprised of family, friends and industry professionals who are both passionate about The Mahle House and committed to delivering an outstanding experience to our guests.
Private dining room for groups available.
The Restaurateurs
Stephen and Tara Wilson took over the operations of The Mahle House in 2009. The husband and wife team met in Victoria and have worked at some of the city’s finest establishments including Camille’s, Il Terrazzo, Cassis Bistro, Café Brio, The Sooke Harbour House and The Fairmount Empress.
Stephen’s professional experience runs the gamut from server to Food & Beverage Director. He is a Certified Sommelier as well as a Red Seal Chef. He leads the kitchen team at the Mahle House as Executive Chef.
Tara has a long history of service in the food industry. Before working in Victoria, she worked at the Mahle House in various capacities from 1983 to 1995. She now manages the front of house and wine program.
Reclaimed Fir and Live Edge Maple Reno
Our tables are made from 90 year old reclaimed fir timbers originally milled at Western Forest Industries sawmill in Lake Cowichan.
These timbers were actually used in the construction of the mill in the 1930s which was eventually dismantled in the 1970s. A group of local farmers from Cedar then salvaged the timbers to build barns. The timbers used in our tables came from Henry Haslam’s barn on Adshead Road.
The table wood was re-sawn locally by Kevin Trotter. The tables were then built right here in Cedar by Tobias Marcoux only a few hundred yards from the restaurant. We hope you enjoy the rustic country feel and look of these tables as befitting our 1904 character home.
The beautiful live-edge maple for the bar tops and shelving comes from Porter’s dairy farm near Chemainus. Many thanks to Tobias Marcoux for the beautiful work treating and installing these pieces.
